COMMITTEES 2007-08

We invite our members to take an active role in their membership. It's a great way to get involved and also do some good for others. The following are committees that serve us well.


MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE


New Member Recruitment and Retention
Steve Fero, Mellissa Boggs, Co-Chairs
Responsible for a campaign that targets appropriate community and business leaders to become members of Kiwanis. An important function of this committee is to monitor and follow up, when necessary, with members regarding their lack of attendance and participation. The committee works to retain members and monitor why members resign. It also develops and implements strategies to encourage regular attendance at club meetings and events.

Membership Applications
Tim Wilcox, Chair
Processes membership applications in accordance with the club's bylaws and direction by the Board of Directors. Applicants must meet guidelines as established by the committee and endorsed by the Board. The committee submits its recommendations to the Board for action.

New Member Orientation
Lynn Kandel, Tom Steiner, Co-Chairs
Informs incoming members about Kiwanis history, club activities and their responsibilities as active members of the Kiwanis Club of Indianapolis. Helps new members feel welcome and get oriented and acclimated into the club.


PAST PRESIDENTS


Jay Brill, Chair
Responsible for updating the Board on the activities of the club's Foundation; overseeing the election of officers and Board members; planning an annual program and memorial services as needed; selecting recipients of the annual Career and Civic Awards; and serving as special counsel to the club's president.

PROGRAM & CLUB MEETING COMMITTEES


Program
Pat Duginske, Gail Rothrock, Larry Taylor, Co-Chairs
Responsible for selecting, communicating, hosting and introducing the programs at our club's weekly meetings. By delivering the very best programs, the committee motivates members to attend meetings and participate in club activities that, in turn, helps all other committees meet their objectives.

Reception
Board Members & New Members
Responsible for making members and visitors feel welcome at weekly meetings. Duties include providing greeters at strategic locations, registering and introducing guests and visiting Kiwanians.

Music
Carl Hayes, Mark VanAuken, Co-Chairs
Uses music to enhance weekly meetings. The committee will provide a song leader and accompanist, get members involved in singing or performing, and arrange for appropriate musical entertainment during mealtime or as a program.

Spiritual Aims
Mark Varnau, Fay Williams, Co-Chairs
Works to enhance the spiritual life of members by providing an invocator for weekly meetings. The committee also plans special programs for observances such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and National Prayer Week.


CLUB RELATIONS AND OPERATIONS COMMITTEES


Interclubs
Joe Marbaugh, Chairs
Arranges for four or more of our members to make planned visits to other Kiwanis club meetings. Attendees earn a meeting attendance credit.

Public Relations
Nancy Ahlrichs, Chair
Works to get media exposure for the club for our weekly meeting speakers, committee programs and member news.

Bylaws
Steve Robinson, Chair
Responsible for keeping club bylaws current.


BUDGET & FINANCE


Budget and Financial Reporting
Marvin Brames, Chair
Prepares and monitors the club's annual budget. Monitors preparation of and reviews the club's monthly financial statements.


MEMBER ACTIVITIES


Golf
Don Steel, Chairs
Plans club golf outings. All club golfers are encouraged to participate.

Softball
Steve Hadley, Brad Schleppi, Co-Chairs
Recruits members, holds practices and sells tickets for the annual Kiwanis/Rotary softball game held mid-summer at Victory Field.


COMMUNITY SERVICE


Fostering Families
Jackie Salmon, Chair
Works to focus on the need for foster homes that will care for children ages birth to 18. The committee also recognizes outstanding foster parents at a club meeting.

Salvation Army Bell Ringers
Chuck Jewell, Lowell Williams, Co-Chairs
Enlists 64 club members to ring bells at Salvation Army Christmas kettles at four locations in downtown Indianapolis.

Kiwanis Kultivation
Roger Kanne, Chair
Encourages members, schools, K-family groups, etc. to plant crabapple trees around the city.

Kommunity Action
Steve Kellam, Chair
Serves as a conduit for projects members are interested in participating in or starting as Kiwanians. These projects would normally be associated with the community, children or other groups that support improvement in the downtown Indianapolis area or with other Kiwanis clubs in the greater Indianapolis area.


YOUTH SERVICES



Young Children Priority One
Steve Kessinger, Chair
Selects, plans, implements, and supports projects that pursue activities elevant to the major emphasis for the year as determined by Kiwanis International and the Indiana District. In recent years, the major emphasis has been on young children.

Partners in Education
Laura Feeney, Chair
Works directly with the principal, faculty and students at Harshman Middle School #101 to provide incentives for better attendance and academic performance at the school. This includes planning a party for recognition of approximately 150 students to validate their improving work, attitude and attendance.

Partners with Riley
Steve Kellam, Bob Baxter, Co-Chairs
Works with our local Kiwanis division of the Indiana District in developing and implementing programs that support and benefit Riley Hospital for Children and other youth-related projects. Has recently developed patient activity carts to be wheeled around Riley Hospital by Kiwanis volunteers. Co-chairs purchase consumable activity cart items given to patients during hospital visits by volunteers.

SPONSORED YOUTH


Aktion
Rob Schlegel, Chair
Sponsors, promotes and advises a service club for handicapped adults that is atterned after a traditional Kiwanis club. Currently, we sponsor one club that meets every other week at Goodwill Industries.

Circle K
Scott Bearby, Deborah Hearn Smith, Jeff Hotchkiss,Co-Chairs
Sponsors, promotes and advises a service club for college students that is patterned after a traditional Kiwanis club. Currently, we sponsor two clubs ? one at Butler University and one at the University of Indianapolis.

Key Club
Lou Drexler, Jay Brill, Co-Chairs
Sponsors, promotes and advises a service club for high school students that is patterned after a traditional Kiwanis club. Currently we sponsor clubs at Arsenal Tech and Perry Meridian High Schools.

Builders Club
Sponsors, promotes and advises a service club with Harshman Middle School students patterned after a traditional Kiwanis club.

K-Kids Club
Trent Cowles, Chair
Sponsors, promotes and advises an elementary school service club at Charity Dye School #27 patterned after traditional Kiwanis club.


YOUTH RECOGNITION


Abe Lincoln Scholarship Awards

Jim Blythe, Steve Tegarden, Co-Chairs
Solicits school nominations and awards scholarships at a luncheon for high school seniors who have overcome severe obstacles in their lives and have achieved despite these adversities.

Basketball State Finals Luncheon
David Wright, Chair
Recognizes the scholastic and athletic achievements of the Marion County high chool boy’s basketball teams and the eight teams playing in the state finals ata luncheon in March.

Football Awards Luncheon
Kim Fogg, Chair
Recognizes the scholastic and athletic achievements of Marion County highschool football teams at a luncheon in early December.

Kiwanis Improvement Program at Southport (KIPS)
Steve Hadley, Evelyn Sayers Eldridge, Co-Chairs
Plans a program at Southport High School to motivate and reward students who have an improved grade point average and attendance. KIPS recognizes the four most improved students in the freshman, sophomore, and juniorclasses. Ten scholarships are awarded to the most improved seniors. A luncheon for these students and their parents is held at the end of the school year.


FUNDRAISING


Abe Lincoln Fellows
Diane Liptack, Chair
Forms a base of permanent financial support for the Abe Lincoln Awards Program by securing donations of $1,000 from members of the club to the foundation. Members who make such gifts are designated "Lincoln Fellows”.

Auction
Suzanne DeCellis, Kathy Carr, So-Chairs
Plans annual Auction to raise funds for youth-related projects in the community.

 


BUSINESS ENTREPRENEURS


This “club within a club” is all about business. Members learn and network with each other about different market segments.

Whether you are in banking, insurance, real estate, healthcare or any of the many business disciplines represented in Kiwanis you will learn first-hand from our local business leaders about the latest trends and opportunities in their fields.


fun stuff!

Fellowship goes far beyond just meetings. Our Member Activities Chair helps keep members active and in touch with such outings as wine tasting parties, Indiana Downs, train rides to Fletcher’s Restaurant, golf, American Cabaret Theater, bike rides, Indians games and much more.
