May, 2007
Annual Tree Planting Successful
This year’s tree planting on Saturday, April 21st was a huge success with over 60 participants planting 32 trees in record time. clubs will offer their assistance. Chairman Steve Kellam reported that we have planted over 300 trees to help beautify the city.

Humanitarian Service Trip Planned
The Kiwanis Club of Indianapolis and Ambassadors for Children are planning a “voluntourism” trip to Guatemala, October 6-13, 2007. This trip will combine several service projects with plenty of time for tourist activities and will be “a week to remember.” A daily itinerary and cost of the trip is available by contacting the Kiwanis Office (636-9700). Questions regarding the trip can be answered by calling Ambassadors for Children office (536-0250) or www.ambassadorsforchildren.org

Kiwanis International Appoints New CEO
The Kiwanis Club of Indianapolis would like to welcome Rob Parker to the staff of Kiwanis International (KI). K I announced August 1, 2006 the appointment of Rob Parker as the organization’s new CEO/Executive Director.

Effective immediately, Parker will further Kiwanis’ growth as a premier service organization by implementing new strategies to communicate the vision and goals of the organization to member and the public. Parker will also be responsible for maintaining a strong financial foundation for the organization and leading the integration of the strategic plan as Kiwanis works towards its goal of one million members by 2015.

Parker brings nearly 25 years of non-profit experience to Kiwanis International. Most recently, he served as president for the Atlanta-based IMPACT Group, which provides executive coaching and organizational development services to both for-profit and non-profit organizations. Parker was also previously a key member of the senior management team for the Boys & Girls Club of America, where he helped raise millions in private-sector support for the organization.
An accomplished speaker and trainer, Parker has extensive experiencepresenting in the U.S. and abroad.

Foundation Grants Funds to Moorhead Auditorium
The Kiwanis Foundation of Indianapolis, Inc. has made a substantial lead gift grant to the Kiwanis International Foundation to assist in building a world class, state-of-the-art multilingual auditorium to be named for long time Downtown Kiwanian Robert G. Moorhead. The Robert G. Moorhead International Auditorium is to be built onto the back side of the Kiwanis International Headquarters building, facing I-465.

The auditorium is being named in honor of Bob Moorhead for his tremendous contributions to Kiwanis International, the Indianapolis community, the state of Indiana, our nation, and the world for over 50 years.

Our foundation has pledged $50,000 over a five-year period ($10,000 per year) beginning in January 2006, and has pledged an additional matching grant of $50,000 over a five-year period ($10,000 per year beginning in January 2006) matching pledges of Kiwanis clubs and individual Kiwanis members other than those belonging to the Kiwanis Club of Indianapolis.

Kiwanis Motto Changed
Kiwanis International has a new official motto: “Serving the Children of the World.” Delegates at the 90th Annual International Convention in Honolulu approved the change to eliminate “We Build” as the organization’s motto. The “We Build” motto, written by International Trustee Roe Fulkerson, was adopted at the 1920 KI Convention in Portland, Oregon. “Serving the Children of the World” became a service slogan after Kiwanis International established the Young Children: Priority One program.

  • The Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana presented the Old House Rehab award to Michael O’Brien and his wife Jackie Nytes for their restoration of the Wilkinson House, 3444 Washington Blvd.

  • Sally Brown was featured in an article in the July 7th edition of the Indianapolis Star. The article was entitled “Tourists on a Mission” and featured the activities of Ambassadors for Children which Sally founded 10 years ago.

  • Rush Yelverton and wife, Annie have been engaged in Salvation Army relief work. They began their duties at John Marshall Middle School for two days and then took a canteen to Moscow, IN daily for 3 days following the tornado. Then they delivered flood cleanup supplies to Martinsville and Evansville with daily trips to Martinsville for a week. Prior to these activities the Yelvertons were in Delaware in late May for their grandson’s high school graduation.

  • At the Indiana University School of Medicine’s Spring Medical Weekend, Dr. Rich Schreiner received the Dr. Glen W. Irwin Jr. Distinguished Faculty Award.

  • Nancy Ahlrichs recently spoke to The FBI Crime Lab Managers Conference in St. Louis and to 450 FBI employees in Quantico, VA.

  • The Annual Peace Award celebration of Ambassadors for Children will be hosted by co-chairs, Bobby Fong and Jim Morris on June 30th.

  • The 2008 Distinguished Alumni Award from the Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis was awarded to Bill Neale.

  • The student cafeteria on the campus of Arsenal Technical High School was recently named in honor of former school board member, Anna Parker. Miss Parker dedicated 50 years as a teacher on campus before joining the school board.

  • Tex Black and his wife, Karen have returned from a train trip to San Francisco. They encountered the Iowa flooding while on the train but arrived in time to see a play produced by son, Andy. However the train trip home was cancelled due to the levies in Illinois not being stable. They elected to fly home and were accommodated in first class after an interesting encounter with the captain of the plane.

  • Eugene White had been named as a trustee at Butler University.

  • Evelyn Sayers Eldridge and husband, Charlie will be traveling in Europe this month. They will visit Switzerland, Germany and France.

  • Greg Retter retired from Chase Bank on June 3rd.

  • Marlene Hatch has been named to Rainmakers, Central Chapter Advisory Board.

  • The most recent issue of the Kiwanis magazine has an article entitled “Heart of a Healer” featuring Mary Bolk.

  • Jackie Clency has been named to the Starfish Initiative board.

  • The Hoosier Trust Co. has elected George Buskirk chairman of the board.

  • Tex Black recently took a train trip to San Francisco. The train took the Northern route out to California and returned by the Southern route. Tex’s trip included being able to attend a play produced by his son.

  • Sarah Evans Barker was the keynote speaker at the 2008 Franklin College commencement ceremony. She also received an honorary doctorate of law from the college.

  • Kay Millar was elected to the board of directors for the Hoosier Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America.

  • David Wright and wife, Stephanie recently traveled to Austria and took a train trip from Vienna to Venice and on to Rome. They were celebrating their 25th anniversary. Congratulations!!

  • Nancy Ahlrichs has been notified that her book, Igniting Gen B and Gen V, is one of three finalists in the business category for the 2008 Benjamin Franklin awards by the Independent Book Publishers Association.

  • Bob Grand has been named as a board member of the Indiana Sports Corp.

  • Tim Worthington was featured in the May 2008 issue of Senior Life in an article entitled “Tim Worthington, President–Elect for Downtown Kiwanis.

  • Congratulations to Steve Young who was recently awarded “The Distinguished Service Award” by the Council of the Great City Schools. The award recognizes and honor business official who exemplify leadership, innovation, commitment and professionalism in urban education.

  • In the April 2008 issue of the Kiwanis Magazine, an interview with Downtown Kiwanian Bobby Fong is featured.

  • The Hoosier Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America has named Kay Millar to its Board of Directors.

  • Leo LaGrotte has been named to the trust committee of the Indiana Bankers Association.

  • Denny Neidigh was recently awarded the Indiana Engineer of the Year by the Indiana Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

  • Bob Baxter was named as a Health Care Heroes finalist in the Volunteer Category at Riley Hospital for Children. Bob has been an active volunteer with the Magic Castle Cart program which brings smiles to many children who are ill. This cart is funded by our club.

  • On Thursday, April 3, 2008, Max Schumacher will receive the Thomas W. Moses Good Scout award at the Crossroads of America Council/Boy Scots of America’s Annual Awards Dinner. This award is presented to those who have made a significant contribution to our community and who exemplify Scouting values.

  • At The Minority Business and Professional Achievers Recognition Awards Dinner, Bobby Fong was presented with the 2008 Accomplished Achievement Award.

  • The winter issue of “Butler Magazine” featured the Alumni Achievement Awards for 2007. Mary Marsh was presented an award for an alumnus of at least 15 years for a long-term commitment of service to Butler University.

  • Two Kiwanians have been named to positions in Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. They are David Wantz, chairman and Greg Fennig, director.

  • John Moriarty has been named chair of the Environmental Law Section of the Indiana State Bar Association.

  • The Indiana Historical Society Board of Trustees has named Sarah Evans Barker second vice chair and Joe Slash as a new member.

  • Mark Varnau was recently elected to the newly formed Board of Advisors of the Arts Council of Indianapolis.

  • Congratulations to Myra Borshoff Cook for her induction into the Central Indiana Business Hall of Fame.

  • Joel Gauthier has been named secretary of the board for Mental Health America of Greater Indianapolis.

  • Making Connections Indianapolis has named Mike Halstead to serve on the board.

  • Mayor Greg Ballard has named Bob Grand to head the Capital Improvement Board, which operates Conseco Fieldhouse, the RCA Dome and the Indiana Convention Center. The board also will operate the new Lucas Oil Stadium.

  • Lacy Leadership Association has named Greg Fennig as a board member.

  • Rush Yelverton was inducted as a member of the Indiana Division Salvation Army Advisory Board.

  • During the recent unrest in Kenya, Sally Brown was part of a group from Indiana being detained in Kenya. We are glad that she and her companions got home safely.

  • Karl Ahlrichs witnessed the arrival of 18 Cuban refugees while he was camping with his stepson at Dry Tortugas National Park off Key West, FL. Karl was able to converse with the refugees in Spanish and was inspired as he saw their happiness as they took their first steps on American soil.
    As part of Greg Ballard’s transition to mayor, Bob Grand was selected to look into the structure of the Mayor’s Office from how the phones work to how the mail is answered, and how the guards provide personal security
    .

  • Hamilton Centers Youth Service Bureau Inc. has added Geof Odle to the board of directors.

  • William R. Neale has been named secretary for the Greater Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce board.

  • Fay H. Williams and Sarah Evans Barker have been named a finalists for the Indiana Commission for Women's Torchbearer Award. This award recognizes women who have led the way to make Indiana a better place to live, work and raise a family.

  • Volunteers of America of Indiana, Inc. has named Charlie Hiltunen to its board of directors.
