community leadership in action

The Kiwanis Club of Indianapolis is one of the premier service clubs in the nation. Boasting a membership of over 300 community leaders, Downtown Kiwanis, as it's known, is one of the largest Kiwanis Clubs out of approximately 8,000 clubs throughout America and the world.

Pictured here are Purdue University president Martin Jischke, presenting, with (left to right) Jerry Israel, University of Indianapolis president; club president Mark Pflum, president of the St. Francis Healthcare Foundation; and Ron Henrickson of Twilight Venture Partners. They are discussing life sciences in Indiana at an October club meeting.

While the size of our membership attests to its popularity, it is the depth and breadth of its community service, the quality of its business networking and the excellence in programming that sets it apart from virtually all other like organizations.

Serving Children: Our more than 30 different committees bring dollars and helping hands to targeted social programs that help children in all levels of education, hospitals, athletics, child advocacy, through foster parenting and more. We partner with many of the leading child service organizations in Indianapolis.

Business Networking:
With such a high level of membership, attending meetings, working on committees and contributing to programs puts you in close contact with our city's key decision makers. Kiwanians are encouraged to do business with other Kiwanians and look out for each other through mentoring.

Fun! Kiwanis is far from all work and no play. A Members Activities committee provides members with a variety of recreational opportunities, from golf to dinner theater and numerous other activities and excursions. And every meeting is staged to be as light-hearted as it is informative.

objects of kiwanis

As Kiwanians, our main objectives are the following:

  • To give primacy to the human and spiritual, rather than to the material values of life.
  • To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships.
  • To promote the adoption and application of higher social, business and professional standards.
  • To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive and serviceable citizenship.
  • To provide through this club, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service, and to build a better community.
  • To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and good will.

club history

The Kiwanis Club of Indianapolis is a club of major milestones.
Any history, however extensive, would have to be woven around the following major events that have marked our long and colorful life:

  • The day of our founding, on August 17, 1916, when we became the first Kiwanis Club in Indiana and 18th in the nation, with a charter membership of 54. The charter was officially presented on October 16, 1916 by International President George F. Hixson.
  • Our city hosting the 22nd annual convention of Kiwanis International, June 20-24, 1937.
  • The election of Jackson A. Raney, one of our Past Presidents, as President of Kiwanis International at the International Convention in Cleveland, Ohio, June 26-30, 1955.
  • Surpassing the 400-member plateau in August 1974 to become the "World's Largest Kiwanis Club."
  • Selection of Indianapolis as the site for the new Kiwanis International headquarters on February 2, 1981.
  • The day we joined Kiwanis International in dropping gender as a requirement of membership and welcoming our first female member in 1987.
  • January 15, 1988 when our club was the first club in the world to reach 500 members.
  • The selection of Indianapolis to be the site of the 1992 Kiwanis International Convention.
  • The election of member Robert G. Moorhead as the 1993-94 president of the Kiwanis International Foundation.
  • The election of member Thomas H. Dunham as the 2000-01 president of the Kiwanis International Foundation.
  • Completion of Kiwanis International's first-ever Worldwide Service Project - raising $75 million to eliminate Iodine Deficiency Disorders in the world.
  • The selection of Indianapolis to be the site of the 2003 Kiwanis International Convention.
  • The day in each of our lives when a Kiwanis pin was affixed to our lapel and we became a member of what we believe is “the world's greatest Kiwanis Club."
